The
District of Columbia is the federal capital of the United States of
America. Think Washington, D.C. and you think of the government, the
White House and Congress. However, the Nation’s Capital is much more
than just the political process. While the heart of our country does
beat proudly on the Potomac River between Virginia and Maryland, Washington,
D.C. is also a dynamic community full of art, theatre, music, entertainment,
history, culture, sports, education and diverse housing. Not much more
than a bog 200 years ago, the District of Columbia today is host to
world-class museums, green parks, monumental architecture and affordable
housing in more than 120 different neighborhoods.
Some of the District’s best-kept secrets can be found in several vibrant,
cosmopolitan neighborhoods such as Adams Morgan, Brookland, Capitol
Hill and Dupont Circle. Georgetown in Northwest Washington boasts a
rich variety of residential and commercial property. Foggy Bottom has
boat rides on the Potomac River, the John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts and George Washington University. Small frame houses
with front porches and Italianate detail are common in the Anacostia
Historic District. From the colorful Latino community of Adams Morgan
to the stately mansions, elegant row houses and urban vistas along the
Sixteenth Street Corridor, housing in the District ranges affordably
from just over $100,000 to more than $8.5 million.
Patriotism abounds in Washington, D.C. Throughout the District there
are reminders of this nation’s great past and promising future. The
federal government is the area’s largest employer and the educational
opportunities are second to none. More than 77,000 students are served
by the District of Columbia Public Schools. Institutions of higher learning
such as Howard University, Georgetown and American University, are household
names. Religious, private and specialty schools such as Sidwell Friends,
Georgetown Day School, Washington Ballet School and Levine School of
Music are excellent additions for those who strive to be the best.
